Answer: Pope Paul VI was the first pope to visit the United States and to address the United Nations General Assembly, arriving in New York City on October 4, 1965. He spent only 14 hours in New York City with a very busy schedule. In fact, Pope Paul VI was the first pope to leave Italy since 1809. The pope visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, the New York Worlds Fair, addressed the United Nations General Assembly, and celebrated Mass at Yankee Stadium. He also met with President Lyndon Johnson at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It was the first meeting between a pope and sitting U.S. president outside of the Vatican.
