Your answer was: Selection reasoning is unknown. |
Answer: The Help Save Venice campaign was an effort to raise money to preserve and restore architectural and artistic treasures from the threat of flooding. The Vatican Post Office issued a set of stamps as part of that effort. The main stamp Scott 520a, a Souvenir Sheet was a map of Venice dated in the late 1600s. The main Venice Map comes from the Vatican Museum Gallery Of Maps printed by Ignazio Danti in 1581. But why was this map selected? Unfortanuly we had no idea. It is a nice artistic map and because the Vatican owns the painting there would not be any copyright issues. Any other ideas?
