Your answer was: as a celebration for the Christian victory at the 1571 Battle of Lepanto. |
Answer: In 1571 Pope Pius V organized the Holy League which was a fleet of Christian ships to go fight against the Turks who were threatening Europe over control of the eastern Meterain sea. The two naval fleets meet near Lepanto Greece on October 7th, 1571. On the day of the battle, it is said that Pope Pius V was meeting with his Cardinals, but left the meeting to go pray the rosary and, after completing his prayer, returned to the Cardinals announcing that through the intervention of Our Lady (the Mother of Jesus) victory had been achieved. Word of the victorious Christian fleet eventually reached Pope Pius V that his revelation had been correct and he instituted the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary to be celebrated yearly on October 7th. The only Vatican stamp we have for Pope Pius V is from an image from the altarpiece of the Chapel of the Rosary in Santa Croce di Bosco Manengo painted around 1597. This painting commemorates the victory in the Battle of Lepanto and Pope Pius V praying the rosary.
