Answer: This rather fascinating story come from Vatican Notes. On June 24th, 1943 Ernst Heinrich Freiherr von Weizsäcker was appointed German ambassador to the Holy See in Rome at his own request. According to his own statements, he had a friendly relationship with Pope Pius XII. With the liberation of Rome in June 1944, the German embassy was moved to the Vatican, where Weizsäcker remained until August 1946 even after Germany's capitulation. The postcard below is sent by Weizacket to Badenweiler Germany (then an occupied French zone).
