The Daily Question

What year did the Vatican Post Office issue the first stamps without the monetary Lire designation (LIRE or L.) being printed on the stamp?

   1956
   1977
   2000
   2001

Your answer was: 1977.
You are correct!!

Answer: Diligent readers of Vatican Notes probably know the answer to this question! The year was 1977. Buried in volume 26, issue 3, page 7 Joseph Lo Preiato gave us the answer in the editor note. The article was on the 1977 Sculptures in Vatican Museum (Scott Number 617-622). Vatican stamps before Scott 617 had monetary Lire designation (LIRE or L.) printed on the stamp. Stamps after Scott 616 did not but were sold using lire. This continued up until the Vatican migrated to the euro.
