Answer: The Sistine Chapel stands on the foundation of an older chapel called the Capella Magna. The Cappella Maggiore chapel was used for smaller events when the crowds were smaller and St. Peter's was not needed. By the time of its demolition, the Cappella Maggiore was in a ruinous state with its walls leaning. Elected in 1471, Pope Sixtus IV wanted to revitalize Rome and build a new church on the Capella Magna site, It would be the same size as the Temple of Jerusalem, with the same dimensions as described in the Bible. Rebuilt, it is a rectangular brick building, now named for Sisrus IV, with six arched windows on each of the two main (or side) walls and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. After its completion, the chapel was originally decorated with paintings but would later be brought to greatness by the hand of Michelangelo.
