Answer: Regular telephone services within the Vatican began after it gained independence in 1929. In 1930 a number of telephones were installed via Rome's urban network to link various Vatican offices and residences. The state's first central telephone exchange, donated by American Catholics, was installed in 1930 and provided telephone service to approximately 360 end users.
