Answer: On June 18, 1939, Saint Francis of Assissi, together with Saint Catherine of Siena, was proclaimed the patron saint of Italy by Pope Pius XII. L'Osservatore Romano of June 19-20, 1939 reported that Pope Pius XII had stated that both St. Francis and St. Catherine had gone thru "extraordinary difficult times" and "they lived with splendor of works and virtues".
