![]() ![]() Saint Francis de Sales From Catholic Press World Exhibition Issue Scott 53-54 (1936) ![]() Saint Francis de Sales 450th Anniversary of Birth Scott 1669 (2017) January 24th is the feast day of St. Francis de Sales. Francis de Sales was born in 1567 into a noble family. Characterized as both intelligent and gentle, from a very early age he desired to serve God. He was educated at the University of Paris and ordained in 1593. He was known as a distinguished preacher and catechist, especially in efforts to win back Calvinists who had abandoned the faith earlier in the 16th century. He also inspired service to the poor. In 1602, he was appointed Bishop of Geneva and is credited with restoring the Church in Geneva. De Sales excelled in administrative work as well as preaching. As a writer, he is known for publishing the Treatise of the Love of God and Introduction to the Devout Life, books which received a popular readership. Although a person of stern ideals for life, his preaching was characterized by sincerity and gentleness which was very effective. Francis de Sales died in 1622. He was canonized in 1665 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877. He is the patron saint of writers. Article Link: |
