Mission: Some study on the history of Advent
This is the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday. The theme is "Gaudete in Domino semper" – “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4). It has a unique spot in the season of Advent and the history of Advent season.
Historical Development of Advent
• Early Advent (5th–6th centuries):
• Began as a 40-day fast after St. Martin’s feast (Nov. 11).
• Known as St. Martin’s Lent, mirroring Lent before Easter.
• It was first organized by Bishop Perpetuus of Tours (461–490), who ordered fasting three days a week starting on November 11 (St. Martin’s Day). Later councils, such as the Council of Mâcon in 581, extended and regulated the practice
• Roman Reform (9th century):
• Advent shortened to four Sundays before Christmas, giving the season its current rhythm.
• Focus shifted from penitential fasting to joyful preparation for Christ’s coming.
• Liturgical Balance:
• Advent became a season of penitence and hope, with Gaudete Sunday as its midpoint of joy.
• Parallels Laetare Sunday in Lent, both offering a liturgical “breathing space.”
Gaudete Sunday – The Rose Candle
• Name & Origin:
• From the introit Gaudete in Domino semper (“Rejoice in the Lord always”).
• Vestments:
• Rose replaces violet, symbolizing joy breaking through Advent’s solemnity.
• Tradition:
• Flowers and music permitted, lifting the tone of worship.
• Children bring Nativity figurines to St. Peter’s Square for blessing.
• Message:
• A reminder that Christ is near, joy is already dawning, and hope cannot be silenced.
Vatican Continuity
• Papal Practice:
• The Vatican highlights Gaudete Sunday with festive liturgies, rose vestments, and homilies on joy.
• Pope Francis called it the “Sunday of joy,” urging gratitude and trust in God’s closeness.
• Symbolism:
• Even in penitential seasons, the Church insists on joy as a theological truth.
• The rose candle is a beacon of hope in the purple procession of Advent.
