• USS Red Rover: Commissioned December 26, 1862, as the first U.S. Navy hospital ship.
• Significance:
• Equipped with operating rooms, sanitation facilities, and refrigeration.
• Hosted the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the first female nurses in U.S. Navy service.
• Symbol of mercy amid war — healing the wounded instead of leaving them to die.
• While not strictly postal, the USS Red Rover provided naval logistics included mail delivery for sailors. (The Civil War era saw significant postal innovations, including field post offices and military mail handling.)
