Feast of the Holy Innocents (Childermas)
🌟 Commemoration
Today we honor the Holy Innocents, the infant martyrs of Bethlehem, slain by Herod’s decree. Though they never spoke Christ’s name, their blood became the first witness to His kingship. St. Augustine hailed them as “infant martyr flowers” — torn from their mothers’ arms, yet crowned with glory at life’s beginning.

🕯️ Medieval English Custom
In medieval England, this feast was called Childermas. Parents would wake their children with a symbolic spanking in bed — not as punishment, but as a ritual reminder of Herod’s cruelty and the sorrow of the day. This somber act impressed upon the young that Christmas joy is shadowed by tears, echoing Rachel’s lament: “She would not be consoled, since they were no more.”

🎠Contrasting Traditions
Playful Pranks
In Spain and Latin America, December 28 is called DĂa de los Santos Inocentes. Instead of mourning, people play lighthearted tricks on friends and family, much like April 1 in the U.S.
After a prank, the joker declares “¡Inocente, inocente!” (“Innocent one, innocent one!”), linking the mischief to the biblical innocents.
Even newspapers and TV stations join in, publishing humorous or fake stories that day.
🍲 Food Fight in Ibi, Spain
In the town of Ibi (Alicante, Spain), locals celebrate with Los Enharinados, a massive mock battle where participants throw flour, eggs, and firecrackers.
This tradition, over 200 years old, is staged as a parody of authority, with “soldiers” taking over the town for a day. It’s all in good fun and raises money for charity.
đź“° Fake News & Public Mischief
Across Spanish-speaking countries, media outlets publish outrageous stories—from fake political announcements to bizarre scientific “discoveries.”
The key is that everyone is in on the joke, and the reveal always comes with the phrase “¡Inocente!

✝️ Reflection
The Holy Innocents remind us that innocence itself can bear witness. Their feast is both mourning and memory, discipline and delight. In the VPS tradition, we mark this day with a pause: a ritual of remembrance, a symbolic gesture of protection for children, and a prayer that innocence may never again be crushed by power.
