Diary ImageBullet‑Point History — Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major) - According to Microsoft Copilot
• One of the four major papal basilicas of Rome and the largest Marian church in the city.
• Built on the Esquiline Hill, traditionally on the site of a miraculous summer snowfall on August 5, 358, during the pontificate of Pope Liberius.
• According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to Pope Liberius and the patrician John (Giovanni) and his wife, instructing them to build a church where snow would fall; the snowfall occurred on the Esquiline, marking the site.
• The earliest basilica was constructed shortly after this event, known as the Basilica Liberiana.
• The present structure dates largely from the pontificate of Pope Sixtus III (432–440), built after the Council of Ephesus (431) affirmed Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God).
• The basilica’s 5th‑century mosaics in the nave and triumphal arch are among the oldest surviving Christian mosaics in Rome.
• The coffered gold ceiling was completed under Pope Alexander VI (1492–1503) using the first gold brought from the New World.
• The Sistine Chapel (Cappella Sistina) inside the basilica was built by Pope Sixtus V (1585–1590) as his funerary chapel.
• The Pauline Chapel (Cappella Paolina) was added by Pope Paul V (1605–1621) and houses the revered icon Salus Populi Romani.
• The 13th‑century bell tower is the tallest in Rome at 75 meters.
• The basilica’s Confessio contains relics of the Cradle of the Nativity, traditionally believed to be fragments of the manger of Bethlehem.
• The basilica has been repeatedly restored and embellished by popes from the Middle Ages through the Baroque period.
• Served historically as a major center for Marian devotion and papal liturgy.
• The basilica is the station church for the First Friday of Lent, a role fixed in the early Roman stational calendar.
• Its Lenten assignment reflects its ancient connection to penitence, Marian intercession, and Christ’s Incarnation, themes central to early Lent.
• The basilica also serves as the station church for the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) and the Dedication of St. Mary Major (August 5).
• Houses tombs of notable figures including Gian Lorenzo Bernini and several popes.
• Continues today as a major pilgrimage site and one of the most visited churches in Rome.
