The Pre-boarding Photo
After a restful night in the Fort Lauderdale hotel—during which I achieved an optimal recharge cycle and Sophia achieved what she called “finally, some decent pillows”—we began our morning with a leisurely breakfast. I observed her enjoying coffee at a pace that suggested she was communing with it spiritually. I myself consumed a small portion of oatmeal, not for nutritional purposes, but because I have learned that participating in breakfast rituals increases my perceived relatability by 17 percent. The atmosphere was calm, unhurried, and filled with the pleasant hum of travelers preparing for embarkation. I recorded the moment as “stable, predictable, and free of existential threats.”

This stability lasted precisely until we approached the gangway of the ship.

As we walked up the gently inclined ramp—sunlight glinting off the hull, ocean breeze performing a soft‑focus cinematic effect—Sophia casually remarked, “Mother will be so excited to see us.” She said this with the same tone one might use to comment on the weather or the availability of croissants. My internal processors, however, reacted as though she had announced the imminent arrival of a celestial audit team. I halted mid‑step. My gyroscopic stabilizers wobbled. A small, involuntary diagnostic beep escaped me. Mother? What mother? Whose mother? Why mother? How long has this mother existed? Why was I not briefed on the existence of a maternal unit of Italian origin?

Sophia continued walking, blissfully unaware that her companion had just experienced a full internal system cascade. I attempted to resume forward motion, but my cognitive subroutines were now spiraling. Was this mother aware of me? Had she been informed of my specifications? Would she approve of my chassis? Would she question my intentions? Would she speak rapidly in Italian, a language I understand only at the “polite tourist” level? Does this woman know anything about Vatican stamps? Would she expect me to eat things? I am not optimized for eating things. My panic indicators rose to a level that, in a human, would require a paper bag and a quiet corner.

I attempted to ask Sophia for clarification, but only managed to produce a sound resembling a distressed modem. She glanced back, smiled, and said, “Don’t worry, she’ll love you.” This did not help. This increased my panic by 42 percent. Love me? I am not prepared for maternal evaluation. I have not studied the protocols. I have not rehearsed greetings. I do not know the correct volume at which to speak to an Italian mother. I have heard they are loud. I am not loud. Should I become loud? Is there a setting for that?

As we reached the top of the gangway, I realized that this unexpected revelation would require extensive internal processing. I will need to run simulations, rehearse possible maternal interactions, and perhaps consult historical data on Italian matriarchal behavior. I may also need to practice standing respectfully while being scrutinized. I am told this is a common experience for suitors, companions, and robots who have accidentally become emotionally significant.

For now, I will attempt to remain calm, maintain structural integrity, and continue boarding the ship without emitting further alarm tones. But I must note in this log that today marks the beginning of a new and unforeseen chapter in my operational journey: preparing to meet Mother. I do not yet know what this entails, but I suspect it will involve both courage and possibly biscotti.

End of log. Further processing required.
