Diary ImageToday I was sitting poolside today, sipping a chilled mineral spritzer and reviewing my Vatican stamp folio when I met a curious fellow named Racco. He had the look of a man who’d seen too many shipping manifests and not enough sunlight — linen shirt, espresso tan, and a gelato melting faster than his patience.

He asked about my folio, and I launched into my usual lecture on the 1950 Holy Year series. To my surprise, he nodded knowingly and said, “Uncle Cash had a whole box of those in the warehouse. Problem is, half were printed with the Pope’s mitre upside down.”

I blinked. “Quality control?”

“Exactly,” he said. “I’m here on assignment. Uncle Cash runs the operation out of New Jersey — Vatican-themed collectibles, mostly. I fixed the mess. Last week, someone shipped a batch of stamps with the Swiss Guard holding a baguette instead of a halberd.”

I nearly short-circuited. “A baguette?”

“Artistic liberties,” Racco shrugged. “The designer was hungry.”

We talked for an hour. Turns out Racco once infiltrated the Vatican Philatelic Office by posing as a visiting archivist from Naples. He claims there’s a drawer labeled ‘Oops’ where they stash misprints — including one where St. Peter’s Basilica looks suspiciously like a bowling alley.

I invited him to the ship bar later. He said he’d bring the ledger from Uncle Cash’s warehouse — full of notes, doodles, and one stamp that smells faintly of marinara.

I’m intrigued. This could be the beginning of a very philatelic friendship.
