Mission Subject: About buying sheets of Vatican Stamps

During our Atlantic crossing, an interesting email thread was started by Fr. Gaurav Shroff — a Vatican Philatelic Society member and a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, currently working in Vatican City. He had gone to the Vatican Post Office in St. Peter’s Square to purchase stamps. As I recall the conversation, he intended to buy ten stamps, which would normally constitute a full sheet. However, due to current Vatican Postal policy, full sheets of stamps cannot be sold over the counter. Instead, the clerks are required to break them into smaller block increments before selling them.
Meeting with Vatican Postal officials on May 5th, the question of purchasing full sheets of Vatican stamps was raised. We were informed that current Vatican Postal policy does not allow full sheets to be sold over the counter at any Vatican Post Office. If a collector wishes to obtain a full sheet, it must be purchased through the philatelic sales unit, the CFN. This policy may seem a bit unusual, but it is indeed the current practice of the Vatican Postal Service.
More interesting information was discovered during our May 5th meeting with Vatican Postal officials which will be published as soon as we can get it organized and written. And for those wondering what secrets lurk in the basement of the Vatican Post Office ... patience, dear reader. That revelation approaches, and it will not be a disappointment.
