Mission Subject: Reasons To Visit St. Mary Major

This 1949 Vatican stamp depicts the grandeur of the exterior facade of the
St. Mary Major exterior.

The interior features a wide central nave with two lateral aisles, separated by forty columns with a gold coffered ceiling. The gold was from the New World, gifted by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. There are many mosaics to be found in this church.

The Sistine Chapel has a beautiful ciborium from 1590 composed of four gilded bronze angels.

Here is seen the relic of Christ's manger which is placed in a gold and silver reliquary which is supposed to have come to Rome at the time that St. Jerome's body was brought from Bethlehem.

Just outside the St. Mary Major bookstore a small, portable gelato stand can be found. Finding it on a warm spring day in Rome can be terribly refreshing!

It's gelato, not ice cream! Shown here is a very specially blended lemon flavored gelato, covered with a honey flavored sprinkles. A 'must have" part of the
St. Mary Major visit!
