Mission Subject: Diplomacy, Concordats, and Commemoratives!
Today my internal calendar chirped a reminder: “June 14 — historically diplomatic!” So naturally, Sophia and I paused our usual morning routine (she was reorganizing her bow collection; I was alphabetizing my magnifying glasses) to celebrate a moment from Vatican history.

On June 14, 1929, the Vatican and Prussia signed a Concordat — one of the earliest diplomatic agreements following the Lateran Treaty. I imagine the pens were elegant, the handshakes solemn, and the postmark on the outgoing mail absolutely immaculate. If only someone had issued a commemorative stamp that very day… but fear not, the Vatican has made up for it since with plenty of diplomatic‑relations stamps.

In fact, the Holy See has a charming habit of celebrating its friendships with beautifully engraved issues. Over the years, stamps have appeared honoring ties with countries far and wide — each one a tiny ambassador printed on gummed paper. I like to think of them as miniature diplomats who never miss a meeting and always dress impeccably.

Inspired by this, I spent the morning flipping through my album, admiring the stamps that commemorate Vatican relations with nations around the globe. Sophia leaned over my shoulder and declared that some of them have better fashion sense than we do. (She may be right. Those engraved papal tiaras are hard to beat.)

Diplomacy, of course, isn’t just treaties and handshakes — it’s also the joy of connection. And what better way to explore those connections than through the Vatican’s philatelic history? Every stamp tells a story: a new friendship, a shared mission, a cultural exchange, or simply a moment when two nations said, “Let’s put this on paper — and then on postage.”

So today, in honor of June 14, I encourage all VPS members to take a little diplomatic tour of their own albums. Look for those stamps celebrating international ties.
