2026 Easter Stamp
As we enter into the radiant light of this Easter season, we are once again invited to contemplate the mystery of the Resurrection—the victory that stands as the definitive "seal" upon the history of our salvation. For those of us who find spiritual depth in the artistry of a stamp, the 2026 Easter issue from Vatican City offers a profound visual meditation. Reproducing the Resurrection of Christ by Domenico Cresti (Passignano) from the Vatican Pinacoteca, the stamp captures the sudden, glorious burst of life against the shadows of the tomb. In this contrast of light and darkness, we see the tangible expression of our faith: that even the deepest shadows are overcome by the dawn of the Risen Lord.

This transition from darkness to light is rooted in the "willing sacrifice" that precedes the glory. In prayer offered in the Liturgy of the Hours, prayed by all priests, deacons, on the solemn occasion of Good Friday, we find these poignant words:

"Look, we pray, O Lord, on this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ did not hesitate to be delivered into the hands of the wicked and submit to the agony of the Cross."

It is precisely because He did not hesitate to offer Himself up to the Wood of the Cross that we can now celebrate the "empty tomb" depicted that has been depicted in countless ways by artists down the ages, on expression of which is marked on this year’s Easter stamp. The Resurrection is not merely a historical commemoration, however, such as the anniversary of the election of a Pope, or some other important event from the Church’s storied past that might end up on a piece of postage. The Resurrection is what changes everything, and it is a continuing event. Death has been conquered. Life is not random, or meaningless, with brief moments of joy graspingly stolen from chaos and darkness, and that ultimately ends in dust and the tomb. Each of us is willed by God, and each of us has a supernatural destiny — the path to which is the road of the Cross, which has been trod already by Jesus, “the pioneer and perfected of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Let us not hesitate to follow! Christ’s victory is to be won in each of our lives.

May this Easter season be for all of you a time of renewed hope and fellowship. As we collect and study these small but significant "windows" into the sacred, let us be reminded that we are messengers of the same Joy that the Passignano masterpiece so vividly portrays. May the peace of the Risen Christ be with you, your families, and our entire Society.

Wishing everyone a most Blessed Easter!
